Communication impacts many of today's societal challenges, as it determines how people perceive life science issues as well as their potential solutions. For example, media portrayals of climate change determine whether people believe climate change exists; is human-caused; and can be mitigated through energy transition. As for health, many people rely on social media for finding information about healthy lifestyles including what to eat or not, or whether getting a vaccination is safe and effective. In these examples, communication is a complex process of interaction in which audiences interact with other people, online or face-to-face, to actively process and produce messages and meanings. They do this to get a grasp of what an issue means to them, how to deal with it, and in this process people strongly influence each other.\n\nThe MSc program Communication, Health and Life Sciences trains students to understand, analyse and facilitate change in complex societal settings related to life science domains, such as climate change, sustainability, food, and health. The program teaches students about the role of communication in addressing societal challenges and opportunities from various disciplinary and stakeholder perspectives. Students learn to translate these issues for different audiences as well as connect science with society, scientists with health professionals, experts with citizens, and different professions. Students develop and apply integrated approaches within and beyond scientific disciplines.\n\nThe program embraces a multi-level approach focusing on the impact of communication on and between individuals, groups and organisations in today's network society. During their studies, students explore processes of communication, interaction, change and innovation within life science domains. They look at the interplay between planned and unplanned change; intervention and behavioural change; media, contestation, conflict and cooperation in pluralistic societies; and the role of 'experts' and 'expertise' in society.\n\n\n\nSpecialisation A - Communication and Innovation\n\nTo deepen the understanding of the role and potential of communication in addressing complex societal challenges, this specialization focusses on understanding interactions in and between two societal arenas that play a key role in enabling or hindering societal problem solving and transformation. On the one hand, there are innovation ecologies in which scientists, technology developers, change makers and intermediaries interact with each other and with those who may use or be affected by socio-technical innovations. On the other hand, there is the public realm where societal problems and solutions become legitimized, contested or doubted in a complex interplay between media, politi
