Johann Greve

Johann Greve is a Berlin-based bassist and composer from Lower Saxony. He moved here in 2019, and since then he's been playing as a sideman across all kinds of projects and carving out a spot in the young jazz scene. His own quartet, founded in early 2023, is where his writing really lives: compositions that work as a foundation for improvisation, with the whole point being to keep the energy high on stage and in the room. The band is a tight unit by now. Saxophonist Bruno Bode, pianist Lajos Meinberg, drummer Leo Gerstner, and Greve himself on bass. It's not about stacking solo moments. Everyone goes to their expressive limit without getting in each other's way, and Greve's bass holds it all together. One critic described it as a pull between gravity and centrifugal force, which sounds dramatic but honestly fits.
