The Kartoffel-Kiste is Duisburg's oldest pub, and it's been doing its thing since 1770. You walk into this half-timbered, heritage-protected building and you can literally feel how old it is. Creaky wooden floors, lots of wood, full of tradition. It's not trying to be fancy, it's just cozy. The whole concept is basically: the potato is the star. And they're not joking. You'll find it boiled, grated, mashed, fried, even as schnapps. But never as fries. Everything is homemade, from classic Reibekuchen to potato noodles, with a lot of recipes that go way back. If you're not feeling the hearty Niederrhein vibe, there's also some Mediterranean stuff on the menu. And vegetarians get options too. It's at the foot of Kaiserberg, close to the zoo and not far from the Innenhafen. Four dining rooms across two floors, plus a beer garden with 180 seats in summer.
