Marine systems, including the worlds seas, oceans and coasts, are essential for supporting life on Earth. At the same time, increased demands are being made on the marine environment to produce sustainable volumes of food, provide seascapes for leisure and tourism, contribute to growing sustainable energy demands, deliver a range of non-renewable mineral resources and regulate growing climate variability. Combined these demands are linking marine systems to other global systems, including food, energy and biodiversity. To meet these multiple demands and contribute to wider societal transitions, new ways of knowing, using and ultimately governing marine systems are needed that rely on integrated knowledge from a range of social and natural science disciplines. The BSc Marine Sciences provides such knowledge and the capacity to positively contribute to sustainable marine ecosystems, societies and economies. \n\nThe objective of the BSc Marine Sciences is to educate internationally oriented bachelor students with interdisciplinary knowledge and skills on marine socio-ecological systems. They will be able to carry out scientific research on the social, economic, biological and biophysical processes, and based on this research, evaluate and design innovative and integrated solutions for the challenges faced in marine socio-ecological systems. Furthermore, they will be reflective and innovative thinkers who can collaborate, cross boundaries and act as agents of change in their future careers. The program will also enable students to develop the skills necessary for shaping their own academic and professional career paths. On completion of the bachelor program, they will be admissible for a range of disciplinary or interdisciplinary master programs in the domains of biosciences, environmental sciences and social sciences.
