The 21st century has been called the "Age of Biology." Advances in understanding of biological systems, from cells to biomes, drive our society forward. These advances are also central to global concerns about how we affect, and are affected by, our natural environment. \n\nIn the BSc Biology programme, you will learn about all aspects of life at different organisational levels from cellular processes influenced by highly specific molecular interactions to ecosystem dynamics driven by diffuse and globally interconnected climate characteristics. You will learn that all biological processes, which are the products of evolution, have distinct functions: small change can reverberate and potentially impact the whole planet. Moreover, you will learn about the adaptability of life. This adaptability can be harnessed by humans to solve current problems, and potentially future ones, if the complex interplay between biological processes at different scales is well understood. \n\nAs a Biology student, you will study the function and interconnectivity of biological processes across scales. Additionally, you learn the fundamentals of science more generally, including math, physics, and chemistry. Knowledge of these disciplines will contribute to your understanding of biomolecules, cells, complete organisms and ecosystems. The BSc Biology programme ensures that your technical vocabulary, your familiarity with mechanisms and model organisms, and your quantitative skills are all well developed. Hypothesis testing, statistical analyses, modelling, and programming are all presented in a way that enables you to understand current trends in biological research. Biology is a broad BSc programme rooted in fundamental science but with many direct links to applied research in an array of life science domains. \n\nYou will gain laboratory and fieldwork skills. In this way, you will experience what different types of biological researchers actually do, and gain insights into their perspectives on the living world. \n\nYour general academic skills will also develop. You will learn to give effective presentations, write scientific papers, and collaborate with fellow students in ways that maximize the value of your team and your teammates. Your opportunities to present, write, and collaborate within different courses will be unified through a skills trajectory. This trajectory, and its associated portfolio, enables you to set goals and to reflect on and improve your performance. \n\nThe breadth of the common part of the programme will help you to identify what aspects of biology interest you the most and will stimulate you to consider possible career paths that can build on this passion. Upon completion of the common part of the programme, you will choose courses to specialize
