Together with the Amsterdam music platform Steppin' into Tomorrow, we will be watching the new documentary “Batik, Beats & Bumbu” by Claire Pijman. Through four (double) portraits, this film shows how a young generation of Dutch people with Indonesian roots are coming to terms with their heritage. How they cherish it and seek out traditional Indonesian customs and traditions, transforming them into something new. They effortlessly blend their dual heritage and strive to bring two cultures together. They seek collaboration with Indonesian entrepreneurs, creating a new cultural cross-pollination between Indonesian and Dutch elements. Featuring the band Nusantara Beat, Michiel Sekan (Jiwa Jiwa), culinary artist Vanja van der Leeden and Studio Guave designers Myrthe Groot & Romée Mulder. Afterwards there is a Q&A with director Claire Pijman!Melkweg often hosts different types of programmes at the same time, such as concerts, club nights and films. Please note that there may occasionally be some noise pollution from other programmes during the screening.
