History
ELSA werd opgericht op 4 mei 1981 in Wenen door studenten uit Polen, Oostenrijk, Hongarije en West-Duitsland. Het idee hierachter was om internationale contacten te stimuleren en wederzijds begrip te creëren onder rechtenstudenten aan beide kanten van het IJzeren Gordijn. In een zeer kort tijdsbestek groeide de belangstelling voor ELSA en kreeg de vereniging ook voet aan grond in Noord-Europa. De meeste internationale bestuursvergaderingen vonden destijds dan ook plaats in Kopenhagen en Helsinki, terwijl het International Office (hoofdkantoor van ELSA) in 1984 in Oslo werd gesitueerd. In 1986 was ELSA actief in negen landen en werd tevens vormgegeven aan de eerste commissies die tot op de dag van vandaag nog bestaan in de lokale ELSA-groepen: Seminars and Conferences is vrijwel direct ontstaan na ELSA’s eerste internationale seminar, dat plaatsvond in Tannenfelde, Duitsland. Scientific Activities (nu Academic Activities) ontstond uit het idee om juridische kennis te verspreiden onder het ELSA-netwerk. Tevens draagt deze commissie zorg voor het European Yearbook of Law, waarin zowel docenten als studenten juridische artikelen publiceren. In de lokale ELSA-groepen organiseert de Academic Activities-commissie veelal de studiereizen en andere uitstapjes naar bijvoorbeeld het Europees Parlement in Brussel of advocatenkantoren. Het Short-Term Exchange Programme (nu STEP oftewel Student Trainee Exchange Programme) kwam voort uit het Canadian Training Programme. In 1984 en 1985, vertrokken hiertoe 13 student-stagiaires uit 8 verschillende landen naar Canada om aldaar stage te lopen. Op de internationale bestuursvergadering in Groningen van 1984 is hiervoor de afkorting STEP aangenomen. Thans heeft STEP een groot aanbod in stageplaatsen in diverse EU-landen. In 1991 had ELSA zich uitgebreid in maar liefst 30 landen. Tevens legde de vereniging contact met de International Law Students’ Association (ILSA), de Amerikaanse variant van ELSA. Activities
The European Law Student Association in Utrecht offers a variety of activities, but our most common ones include visits to law firms in Utrecht and Amsterdam, guest lectures on a variety of legal and pseudo-legal topics (starting this year with the liability surrounding self-driving cars), and outings to other institutions such as prisons and courts. On top of these we provide access to activities offered by the ELSA groups in the other cities in the Netherlands, as well as those organized by ELSA International, notably the ELSA Moot Court Competition and the European Human Rights Moot Court competition. We further provide a forum to meet other aspiring lawyers in Utrecht, and pass through the occasional invitation to join activities in other ELSA cities throughout Europe. ELSA is therefore a wonderful opportunity to establish a network while you’re here, which you can start at the legal pub crawl coming wednesday! We start at 9 o’clock at De Luifel, and would love to answer any more questions you might have while we’re there. Mission & vision
Leden van ELSA zijn ruimdenkend, internationaal georiënteerd en geïnteresseerd in culturele diversiteit op het juridische vlak. Als ELSA-lid doen zij directe ervaringen op met verschillende rechtssystemen en handelspraktijken. De naam van de verenging doet vermoeden dat ELSA voornamelijk gefocust is op Europees Recht. Echter overkoepelt ELSA alle rechtsgebieden en is het interessant voor iedere rechtenstudent. Of je nu geïnteresseerd bent in strafrecht of in ondernemingsrecht, met haar vele activiteiten, zal ELSA altijd van toegevoegde waarde zijn als je verder wil kijken dan je studieboeken. Het doel van ELSA is bijdragen aan juridisch onderwijs, bevorderen van wederzijds begrip en promoten van sociale verantwoordelijkheid van rechtenstudenten en jonge advocaten. Om dit doel te kunnen bereiken biedt ELSA rechtenstudenten en jonge advocaten de mogelijkheid om andere culturen en rechtssystemen te leren kennen door middel van kritische dialogen en wetenschappelijke samenwerking.Op deze manier probeert ELSA hen aan te moedigen om zich in te zetten voor het welzijn van de maatschappij waar zij een deel van uitmaken.
