Coffee Atelier is five interlinked 1927 shop houses in the heart of Georgetown, a UNESCO World Heritage spot. Back in the day, people lived upstairs and worked downstairs, and one of these buildings was literally a coffee merchant's workshop. The original wood-fired roasting equipment is still sitting there in the back, which is where the name comes from. It's not a gimmick, it's just history that's still around. Today the space does a lot at once. There's an art gallery that focuses on Malaysian art and occasionally hosts exhibitions from local and international artists. There's a restaurant called Christoph's, run by an Austrian guy named Christoph. And there's a Kopi Museum, which used to be the Kim Guan Coffee Factory, a small but busy roaster's workshop. Plus, the whole place doubles as a hotel with suites that keep the old-school charm but have modern stuff like AC, WiFi, and flatscreen TVs.
