History
128 years ago, four mining engineering students from Delft; R.J. Boers, A.W.F. Kerssen, E.A. Neeb and A.H. van Lessen, established the Mijnbouwkundige Vereeniging. They realised that by uniting students under an association, the study and student life can be improved for ‘Mijnbouw’ or ‘Mining’ students in Delft. A few years after the establishment in 1872, the study and its association moved to their own faculty, the ‘Mijnbouwfaculteit’, situated at Mijnbouwstraat 120 in Delft. After some initial struggles, the study and its association thrived. Mainly because of the growth of the mining industry in The Netherlands, many students chose the study of Mining Engineering, as Applied Earth Sciences was called in its early days. By organising lectures, excursions and drinks, the study association fulfilled its purpose gracefully and thus was used to its full potential by its members. The need for a regular meeting and drinking spot was felt, and mining students searched through the center of Delft for a suitable meeting establishment. A cafe located on the Noordeinde, ‘Het Noorden’ was eventually chosen, mainly because of its very hospitable host, Jan Garos, and his wife, Fiep. They provided the members of the Mijnbouwkundige Vereeniging with drinks and food. But it was during the Second World War that they really helped the students and many others in Delft. ‘Het Noorden’ Het Noorden was one of the main meeting spots of J.A.A Mekel (after whom the Mekelpark is named) and his resistance group, consisting of a lot of members of the Mijnbouwkundige Vereeniging. Due to three exits to public spaces, a church, the cafe and the street, it was a perfect place to collaborate against the Nazi regime. Sadly, they were eventually found out and executed. A memorial for all the students and professors of mining engineering can still be found at the old and new faculty of Applied Earth Sciences. Activities
The MV organizes numerous activities for its members: Bachelor students, Master students and PhD students. There are also some activities organized for alumni and staff. A number of excursions take place every year: the zero excursion takes place in advance of the introduction week of Delft. During this excursion the new students will visit some companies and get to know something about geology during a walk. The Secondyear Exursion takes place in February and is a week full of company visits. The aim of the excursion is to show the possibilities of every master track. Besides the MV is responsible for plenty of other activities such as barbecues, lectures, and every 2.5 years a Lustrum or Half Lustrum which includes a symposium. Center of many activities is our own pub ‘het Noorden’ in the center of Delft. Besides the regular Noorden evening, which takes place every Wednesday, there is a Barbaraborrel every first Friday of the month. This drink is for alumni, MSc students and faculty staff, and promotes contact between both the alumni and the students. At fixed periods during the year the MV organizes company visits to the faculty. Companies from a particular specialization visit the faculty and give a presentation on the opportunities for students of Applied Earth Sciences, sometimes followed by an interview session. The Company Visits are mainly aimed at MSc-students, who often find a suitable job thanks to these visits.
