Sound land and water management is crucial in addressing global challenges such as poverty alleviation, food security, and the prevention or mitigation of climate change induced conflicts and disasters. The MSc program International Land and Water Management focuses on the scientific analysis of land and water management issues at various scales. It emphasizes integrating different types of knowledges, cultural perspectives and paradigms, combining physical, technical, socio-economic and political dimensions to approach land and water management problems comprehensively. The program's core is to study how land and water are managed. Specifically, students learn how, in various complex global settings, people and technology are organized to use and manage these natural resources. Rooted in this understanding they may, in a decolonial way, be involved in contributing to alternative management configurations. The program offers four specializations, preparing students for careers in research, policy, consultancy and international development.\n\nA. Sustainable Land Management\n\nThis specialization focuses on the processes, drivers and consequences of land degradation, as well as interventions and conservation practices for sustainable land management. Students are educated to explore, design, test, evaluate and critically reflect on innovative practices and strategies to prevent and remediate soil degradation processes globally, often in collaboration with local stakeholders. Key topics include upscaling and downscaling these processes and practices across time and space.\n\nB. Water, Society & Technology\n\nStudents specializing in this area gain extensive knowledge on water use in agriculture, factoring in climate change. The focus is on irrigated agriculture, from the farm level to the watershed level. Topics include irrigation and drainage of agricultural land, irrigation system design, improving the social and technical performance of farm irrigation systems and practices, and understanding irrigation in the broader water management context. The specialization increasingly covers related themes like rural-urban water linkages, (virtual) water in world food trade, water justice, and the role of other water users in the watershed, such as hydropower dams and mining projects.\n\nC. Adaptive Water Management\n\nAs human induced pressures on water cycles and growing water demands increase, this specialization teaches students how to manage water systems carefully. Students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to analyse and propose strategies, policies and innovations for climate-adaptive water management.\n\nD.
