Kinky Star is a youth and music center in Ghent that's been doing its thing since 1997. It started when Luc Waegeman, ex-drummer of the SeXmachines, wanted to put out his band's own record. That turned into a label, a café, and a stage. Still non-commercial, still DIY. The focus is alternative genres and young artists getting their first shot. Open Wednesday to Saturday, and there's pretty much always something happening. Want to play here? Send your demos to bookings@kinkystar.com. The programming isn't one person's call, a whole crew of staff and volunteers decides together. What makes it worth a visit: it's a meeting spot for music lovers, musicians, and anyone curious. Café and terrace seating, gender-neutral toilets, free tap water, wheelchair-accessible terrace (ask for help with access). No room for hate or discrimination, that part's non-negotiable. About 97% of this place runs on volunteers, from booking to pouring pints. You could join them. Or just come hang out. Both work.
