FRIDA is the only book café in Twente and the first English-only bookshop in Enschede. It opened in May 2024, and honestly, it’s not just a place to buy books. It’s a social enterprise that runs on coffee, community, and the idea that your worth isn’t tied to how productive you are. The space is built for young people (18, 30) who want a quiet moment with a book, a creative event, or just somewhere to exist without judgment. In its first year, over 11,000 people walked through the doors, and 4,600+ showed up for events. There’s a crew of 90+ volunteers keeping things running, which says a lot about the vibe. FRIDA stands for Food, Reading, Innovation, Diversity, and Art, named after Frida Kahlo. It’s also a registered non-profit, so every coffee and book you buy helps fund their mission: supporting emerging artists from underrepresented groups, including women, queer, and neurodiverse creators.
